Security Cameras Solve a Hit and Run

The death of anyone is a tragic event, but it's even worse when someone is cut down early in life. If a young person is killed then it's absolutely necessary to hold the killer accountable for their actions in order to try to keep our country safe for kids. Lately, we are seeing a growing trend of investigators using security camera footage to help solve all kinds of case.

Having just gotten off work, a young woman and two friends were walking back to the college they attended through the streets of Hamburg, NY just past midnight in October of 2008. They had made this trip before, but this time on the way home a SUV slammed into the young college student and launched her more then 30 feet though the air. She landed in the front yard of a woman's home and they quickly got her to the hospital but she died from her injuries by mid morning. The driver then slowed down for a moment, then quickly fled the scene.

Because it was dark and the hit and run happened so fast, eye witnesses on the scene were only able to offer the police a limited description of the vehicle. The investigators were told that it was an SUV and they believed it to be maroon. Some pieces of the vehicle were left behind and the detectives believed that the windshield was damaged. With the limited evidence they had, the police began an extensive search that lasted most of the following day until they got they're big break at a near by fast food restaurant.

Recorded video footage showed a vehicle matching the description going through the drive through a short while before the accident, clearly showing both the SUV and the driver's face. With this evidence the detectives were able to identify the driver as a forty one year old lawyer who also lived in the small town. They found evidence that led them to believe that the driver had tried to repair his SUV by himself to cover up the hit and run. According to a police spokesperson, when they confronted the attorney with some of the evidence, he promptly confessed.
