Android in the U.S. Army

The U.S. military is planning a platform for applications based on popular operating system of Google, the Android, which will help the soldiers in regular operations. The first device that will arise as a result of this effort to bear the name «Joint Battle Command-Platform (JBC-P) Handheld».

The framework underlying the platform, called «Mobile / Handheld Computing Environment», allows applications to provide security and flexibility of use in the various chambers of the U.S. military, regardless of the developer of each application.

The platform is designed from the Annex Software Engineering Directorate in Huntsville, Alabama.

The JBC-P will be used on the battlefield by the Army and Marines by 2013. It gives the power of communication systems in aircraft, helicopters, land weapon systems and the existing portable equipment.

The platform development kit will be available to developers by next July. The leaders of the U.S. Army is expected to decide whether to use a common commercial hardware or hardware only state to implement the JBC-P smartphone.
