Motorola Defy

How controversial can be a cell phone anyway? Enough judging by the «hype», which has created the Defy, on the smart features and rugged nature, with ads that they want to do ... diving to withstand snow, mud, etc. and yet ... think smart in the ... intermediate. Let's solve the doubt is: it is not 100% tough phone, will not resist ... nuclear war. It withstands falls from height crazy (at least not better than average) or promises to make your snorkeling along the bottom of ... Caribbean.

Conversely, however, proved so clever and reliable as advertised by the technicians of Motorola, which I, as possible - now we say client, I am tremendously. "Smart" So, equipped with version 2.1 of the Android OS (aka Éclair) which, however, said the technicians Motorola is able to be upgraded - clearly preferable, version 2.2 (sometime in 2011). Good quality construction, therefore, very good technical characteristics for such a cell - to ... value close to 350 C - simply irrelevant UI (personal opinion ever) and, of course, very good range and ... performance under heavy use. All of the above two paragraphs summarize our impressions of the new "hard" phone of Motorola, after 2 weeks of daily coexistence. So finished the presentation?

Of course not, just starting ...

The truth is that we found on several Internet videos with the device is immersed in water for a few minutes ... and then "on its last legs", the touch screen because of the humidity ... covered across the back of ... There needs to be a nuclear physicist, however, to make sure that this smartphone, not as "tough" but they want to present it - rightly-planners. The rear part of the course is non-slip cover, so "tied" easily with our hand, preventing the device to slip out of hand even cit .. you are very active type of user. Conversely, however, the front side refers to ... high end smartphone, with its impressive TFT touch screen of 3.7 inches to make its presence felt both in the resolution (resolution 480 x 854 pixels) and with its response, even under intense conditions of use. The DEFY therefore does not seem so tough as he wants to be (at least in front), thus satisfying even "sophisticated" users by appearance.

Do not ask for much, of course, after a trip to ... "Skeleton" of the device will reveal several points, which are likely to refer to as "chopped", as the side of the device for example, with 6 well-placed screws, trying to earn him credibility and strength in difficult wet conditions or contact with water (a limited quantity of course). There is also a way of protecting the internal circuits of the device from contact with water, except perhaps a small strip of tire rubber on the cover of the battery and trying to protect the Defy, by contact with the liquid component. Do not try, however, because it fails to prevent the ... inevitable, but major flaws can be found on both covers - rubber-load of jacks and cable 3.5 mm. As you see in the pictures, the model sent to us by Motorola, the two caps are not "tie up" completely with the slots, so if immersed in water is mathematically certain to come into contact with it at some point (after the second - third dive) the inner contacts, so - at some point, cease to operate.

All this of course is hypothetical and respond to the worst cases that may be asked to use the device. In most ... down to earth features, therefore, we can mention the expense of refusing to exceed 118 grams and the overall dimensions of which barely touch the 107 x 59 x 13.4 mm, and its impressive ease of use while traveling in pockets, bags in hand to ... dashboard, etc. The display of - say - that is made from Gorilla Glass, which is highly resistant to scratches and general wear. With our responsibility, we tried to define the device and the truth is that stubbornly refused to wear down significantly, even after the fifth try our very positive feature for ... device name and reputation in the market.

Hmm .... what else? From Defy not missing of course, classic-"goodies" of more Android smartphones, such as sensors and rotation approach (to automatically turn off the backlight when you approach your ear), four key points below the TFT screen the ... known ("menu", "home screen", "back" and "search»), multitouch support for browsing mobile internet and photo menus, etc. Around the encounter - as we mentioned two-pin sockets for the MICR USB 2.0 and 3.5 mm headphones and two more buttons: an On / Off at the top and another to adjust the sound in the headphones. For the curious, finally, inside the device and more specifically under the Li-Ion battery, you will find two connectors on the SIM card and microSD card of 2 GB to be found in the basic package offer. The installation is simple, very easy, but their position - attention again, makes the device vulnerable to damage from moisture on contact with water for some time.

The search and finally, something more ... impressive is not going to find, except the digital camera 5.0Mpixels available at the rear, but will talk later.

Resistant to water anyway?

Motorola engineers are stated at the presentation device that is compatible with the IP67 standard for protection against dust and immersion in water between 15 cm and 1 meter. In reality this is not true. The phone is completely reliable physical and tough enough to withstand use, well above the average of Mines. No. But it is not 100% waterproof in water, especially if you put it under the surface. None of the wells is not adequately protected, so the first moment you dip in water, humidity and drops will fill the slots for 3.5 mm headphones and micro USB 2.0 connector, while it is certain that water will enter the handset the microphone of the device. Even if he continues to work for some (or most) will soon lose the significant features. For this reason, NO do not immerse in water or to dispose of constant snow, dirt and mud.

Can not afford to comfort but contact with dust and sand, humidity or contact with several drops of water, while the screen is quite resistant to the point ... impressive. Similar offers protection from falls, however, the model, since it is sure to endure and will continue to operate, but not without damage to the frame (scratches, cracks, etc.) or the screen if you ... unlucky.

The menu Android OS 2.1

Now let's not say the same ... The device could easily be "dressed" in the colors of the Android OS 2.2 or better, but to keep it more acceptable to middle-ranking category of smartphones, technicians Motorola supplied with the version 2.1 (Éclair). What does this mean? Quite simply you will have an increasingly anxious about the applications installed in internal memory after installing directly to the SD card is not possible (by legal means, at least). The classic UI of Motorola do - unfortunately in this model emerged, leading to revisit after a long time poorly designed widgets, moderate translations in Greek (for always talking widgets) and physical deficiencies in terms of social connectivity networks, control of all our email, etc. In short, we need to look pretty in the Android Market to furnish the model with several widgets for access to Facebook, Twitter, etc., control of your Exchange Email, etc.

The boot process of the device of course is very fast, feature reveals that a good 800aris processor is "hidden" somewhere in the interior. The known initial setup screen Android OS welcomes us then, no surprises. So add the Gmail account, we define how to display the date and time, connect the device to an Access point that can be near us, add other email accounts, if we have a lot to the device and generally customize the DEFY in such a way to suit the tastes and habits. The whole process does not take much time, so after a few minutes in front of us displayed the classic UI made by Motorola.

From the pre-installed applications, particularly impressed us operate 3G Mobile Hot Spot, an ability to connect any PC, netbook, tablet or via WiFI at Motorola DEFY and use it as a modem connection to mobile internet. The association process, however, was very simple and the reliability of impressed us once managed and associated with each device of choice. Other features of our model is quite satisfied with preinstalled operating calculating the volume of data consumed by surfing the mobile internet, while similar impressions let us menus and "Battery Management". With this function the user can "learn" the DEFY what use do we need - energy - has never needed to the device manages to save more energy. This record is a Battery Profile Manager in short, all you will find pre-menu "Settings" of the device is waiting for you.

The Motorola Defy has 512MB of RAM, a remarkably large amount of equipment in that category. This allows him to remain "vigorous" and high speed even when running several parallel applications. We used, for example with active applications Gmail, Browser, Facebook, Twitter and parameterized menu ADW Launcher and the performance was impressive. Our answer incoming calls, of course, in some cases showed a small crash, but fortunately not annoying.

Specifications

The Motorola DEFY that we had had installed version 2.1 - update 1 of the Android OS and version 2.34.1 (Moto Version) for the UI of Motorola. No problems with the sound during our calls, or other samples mikrofonismou even calls prolonged. The upgrade process was in version 2.51.1 using the Sync-upgrade of Motorola, which was completed successfully, without losing any of the data of our device.

The internal memory of the device reaches the 2GB and demonstrated good place for dozens of applications, with a similar concession to speed in the menu if you fill it until the bitter end. Apart from this, the user can use and 2GB microSD memory card that can be found in the basic package bid for the storage of several multimedia file format movies in MPEG4, 3GP, etc. For this reason we have applied to play files in formats MP4/WMV/H.263/H.264, but impressive image quality or significant customization capabilities. If you want of course to increase the capacity of Defy, you can of course provide it with a memory card with more capacity, since the device is compatible with microSD cards up to 32GB - always according to the very Motorola.

Motorola DEFY - Review
Dimensions: 1632 x 1224
Size: 621011 bytes

In other features, it is good to mention it has GPS receiver with A-GPS support, in addition to navigation with the help of the receiver, A-GPS service will work to continually update the position of the device through connection through mobile internet. Special impressed us but the WLAN transceiver device, which after 2-3 days of normal operation and connection with our router (Oxygen), began to lose connection signal at regular intervals. After one day, stopped automatically connects to the router, that if we in the device. Unique solution was to reboot our router whenever DEFY could not connect with him ... Until today, the day when the review this was not possible to solve otherwise the problem.

Having talked to the WLAN transceiver device, let us note that the Defy is compatible with DLNA technology, which means it can connect to any compatible household appliance (such as stereo, gadget, etc.). So when it is activated the WLAN Defy constantly search the site for compatible devices and when found, inform the user further moves.
